Groveland Gallery is pleased present Life Aquatic, an exhibition of new paintings by guest artist Samantha French. A Minnesota native, French graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2005. Since that time she has exhibited her paintings throughout the United States, and her work is included in numerous private and public collections across the country. French lives and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, New York.

Born and raised in Nisswa, Minnesota, French grew up in the heart of the Brainerd Lakes area. Known for its culture of summer cabins and weekend getaways for Twin Citians, French’s paintings are inspired by her intimate experience with “lake life.” Her memories of her childhood summers, combined with her profound connection with the place she considers “home,” infuse French’s dynamic waterscapes with authenticity. In her paintings, swimmers float, dive and push toward the water’s surface. Although she relies on a palette of bold colors and active compositions, her paintings capture a feeling of graceful weightlessness, the quiet solitude only felt below the surface of water. About these paintings, French writes:

Using vague yet consuming memories from my childhood summers spent immersed in the tepid lakes of northern Minnesota, I attempt to recreate the quiet tranquility of water and nature; of days spent sinking and floating, still and peaceful. These paintings are a link to my home and my continual search for the feeling of sun on my face and warm summer days at the lake. They are my escape, a subtle reprieve from the day-to-day.

The artist will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, January 25 from 2-5 p.m. The exhibition runs concurrently with Water’s Edge, a group exhibition of paintings and prints in the main gallery. For more information please call 612-377-7800 or visit www.grovelandgallery.com.
